Scotland is where UK family adventure goes big: sea eagles instead of seagulls, castles on islands in lochs, beaches that would look Caribbean if it were 15 degrees warmer. Distances are real, so pick one region and explore it deeply rather than driving the whole Highlands in a week.
However many of these you tick off, capture each one as it happens — a photo, a voice note, where you were — with a family adventure log like PocketTreasures, and turn the best of them into a printed family photo book at the end of the year.
The best family adventures in Scotland
Loch an Eilein, Cairngorms
A gentle circuit around a loch with a ruined 13th-century castle on an island, in ancient Caledonian pine forest. Red squirrels almost guaranteed.
The Jacobite steam train over Glenfinnan
The 'Hogwarts Express' viaduct, in real life. Ride the train from Fort William to Mallaig, or walk to the viewpoint for the 10:45 crossing.
Sea kayaking on Loch Morlich or Arisaig
Sheltered water, white-sand beaches, and outfitters who cater to families. Arisaig's skerries feel like the Bahamas in wetsuits.
A first Munro: Ben Lomond or Schiehallion
Both have clear paths and no scrambling. Age 8+ with hill experience; the summit certificate energy lasts for weeks.
Puffins on the Isle of May or Lunga
Boat trips from Anstruther or Mull land you metres from puffin burrows in early summer. Better than any zoo.
Wild beach day at Achmelvich or Luskentyre
Two of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, routinely near-empty. Bring windbreaks and a kite.
Urquhart Castle and a Loch Ness cruise
Ruined castle, dramatic loch, monster mythology — a guaranteed hit with the under-10s.
When to go
May and June are the sweet spot: long daylight (18+ hours in the north), fewer midges than July–August, and puffin season on the islands. September brings stags roaring in the glens.
Make it last longer than the drive home
The difference between a day out and a memory is what you do in the 30 seconds after it happens. Log the photo, say one sentence about it into your phone, and let PocketTreasures turn it into a story your children will read back for years.
