15 autumn family adventures in the UK

Autumn is the season British families waste. Summer's crowds are gone, the woods turn gold, wildlife puts on its biggest show of the year — and most of us are indoors by five. Here are fifteen adventures for September to November.

The classics, upgraded

• Conker championship — collect, drill, string, and run a proper family tournament with a trophy.
• Leaf-fall race — catch a falling leaf before it lands. Absurdly difficult, endlessly funny.
• The golden-hour woods walk — beech woods in late October: Westonbirt, the New Forest, Faskally. Go at 4pm when the light goes horizontal.
• Blackberry expedition — then crumble. The full farm-to-table adventure for under £2.
• Puddle-and-wellies audit — first proper rain of autumn, best puddles in the parish, scored for depth and splash.

Wildlife's biggest month

• The deer rut (Oct) — bellowing stags at Richmond Park, Bradgate, Bushy or any Highland glen. Keep 50m back; it's the best free wildlife theatre in Britain.
• Starling murmurations (Nov on) — Somerset Levels, Brighton Pier, Aberystwyth. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset.
• Salmon leaps — watch salmon jumping falls at Stainforth Force, Cenarth or the Falls of Shin after autumn rain.
• Fungi safari — photograph, don't pick: fly agarics make kids gasp. New Forest is the UK capital.

Dark comes early — use it

• First stargazing of the season — dark by 7pm means kids can actually be awake for it. Orion returns; see a Dark Sky site.
• Torch-lit woods walk — the daytime path, after dark. Owls, rustles, delighted terror.
• Bonfire night done properly — a real local display, sparklers, and the same toffee apples every year: instant tradition.
