Cornwall is the family adventure county. Nowhere else in the UK packs surf beaches, rockpools, castles, cliff walks and pasties into such a compact, child-friendly package. The catch is that everyone knows it — so the best Cornish adventures are about timing and picking the spots the crowds miss.
However many of these you tick off, capture each one as it happens — a photo, a voice note, where you were — with a family adventure log like PocketTreasures, and turn the best of them into a printed family photo book at the end of the year.
The best family adventures in Cornwall
Rockpooling at Polzeath or Kynance Cove
Low tide reveals anemones, blennies and the occasional starfish. Kynance's white sand and turquoise water make it feel Mediterranean on a sunny day.
First surf lesson at Fistral or Watergate Bay
Newquay's surf schools take children from about age 6. Wetsuits handle the Atlantic; the pride on a first stand-up handles everything else.
The Camel Trail by bike
Eighteen flat, traffic-free miles from Padstow to Bodmin along a disused railway. Hire bikes and trailers in Wadebridge and stop for ice cream in Padstow.
St Michael's Mount at low tide
Walk the cobbled causeway across the sand to a castle on an island. Check tide times — getting 'stranded' and taking the boat back is half the adventure.
The Lost Gardens of Heligan
Jungle walkways, rope bridges, and the famous Mud Maid sculpture. Genuinely engaging for children in a way many gardens are not.
Tintagel Castle and Merlin's Cave
King Arthur legend, a dramatic footbridge between the clifftops, and a cave to explore under the castle at low tide.
Geevor Tin Mine
Go underground in an 18th-century mine near Land's End. Hard hats provided; the scale of it stays with children for years.
When to go
May, June and September give you Cornwall's beaches without August's crowds and prices. Rockpooling is best on spring low tides year-round; surf is warmest (relatively) in early autumn.
Make it last longer than the drive home
The difference between a day out and a memory is what you do in the 30 seconds after it happens. Log the photo, say one sentence about it into your phone, and let PocketTreasures turn it into a story your children will read back for years. See all our 40 UK family adventure ideas for the full national list.
