A beach day with kids is either the best day of the summer or a sand-in-the-sandwiches endurance event — and the difference is almost entirely preparation. Here is the system.
The packing list (laminate this)
- Non-negotiables: suncream (applied before leaving), water ×2 what you think, snacks ×3 what you think, full change of clothes per child, towels + one spare, bags for wet things
- Comfort multipliers: windbreak (British beaches are wind first, beach second), cheap pop-up shade for babies, a flask of something hot for the 4pm shiver
- The £5 heroes: bucket and spade, crabbing line and bacon, cheap kite, ball. Skip the inflatables on any beach with wind or currents.
- Recovery kit in the car: talcum powder (removes dry sand like magic), water bottle for foot-rinsing, dry socks, biscuit ration for the drive
Timing beats everything
Arrive by 9:30: parking exists, the beach is empty, small children are at their best. Leave before the collapse — the classic error is squeezing one more hour out of tired kids. Check the tide: a falling tide all afternoon means growing beach and fresh rockpools; a rising one eats your camp.
Beyond digging: the game list
- Rockpool safari at low tide (bucket, patience, name everything)
- Sandcastle with an engineering brief: must survive one wave
- The treasure line: whoever finds the best shell/stone/claw per category
- Dam the stream — where a stream crosses the beach, hours disappear
- Beach art: giant sand drawings photographed from the cliff/dune above
Capture it before the car park amnesia
One photo of the rockpool find, ten seconds of voice note with what they named the crab — do it at the beach, because by the drive home it's gone. That thirty-second habit (the whole idea behind a family adventure log) is what turns beach days into the holiday photo book's best pages.
